Diet
Okay, let's get the technical stuff out of the way. There are several definitions to diet.
The first is a noun that means abstinence from food (little or no eating).
The next is a noun that means the daily intake of food (what you eat).
The next is a verb that means to control the amounts of food, count calories, etc.
We will use the second definition as our default when we talk about diet; it will be what is in your eating routine.
My diet consists of 5 or 6 small meals per day with the focus on protein and fiber. I also work pretty hard to get the 5 or 6 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. There are numerous ways to decide what your diet should consist of, and we will take you through a systematic approach.
There are many things to consider, including: age, sex, height, BMI, current level of activity, your goals, and even genetics for body builders. BMI is an acronym for body mass index, use this link to run these calculations. BMI Calculator Get your calculations and come back here.
Understand that the majority of people weigh more than they want (or need) to, and this will give you a starting point. If your weight is what you want it to be, congratulations! The next part of this exercise is to figure out your daily calorie needs, which will depend on your desired weight and your current activity level. I use an old-fashioned system of books and charts to track my diet (calorie intake), but, guess what? There are calculators available and this one is pretty good, and free, with a journal included. We are in favor of the food pyramid as used by the USDA, which was updated in 2005. They supply a lot of good info as shown here. Food Pyramid As you get familiar with the terms and uses in this fitness/health arena, a lot of it will become second nature (if you are learning and applying good habits [Mental Attitude]).
